Neville

Wakefield

Bio

Neville Wakefield records, documents and shapes the culture he lives in. A philosophy post-grad he combines objects, images, action and thought into a provocative magnetized syntheses. A creative director, writer, curator and commentator on contemporary art and culture, Wakefield has taken a somewhat freewheeling approach to his career, shifting between roles as varied as creative director for major brands such as Nike, Playboy, Van Cleef & Arpels and curator to public institutions and private collections around the globe.

As the New Yorker magazine recently observed, “The writer Neville Wakefield is one of the best curators around - his sure handed visual sense often rivals that of the artist’s he’s working with.” Renowned artist and frequent collaborator Richard Prince, was recently quoted in the New York Times: “Neville is able to tap, conjure, feed off of and trust the truth of the unconscious rather than peddle the dull and dour of dim reality. Unlike most curators, he actually hangs out with artists. In fact, I’ve always treated him like another artist.”

Wakefield has served as the Senior Curatorial Advisor for PS1 MoMA and Curator of Frieze Projects at the Frieze Art Fair. In addition, Neville is Co-Founder of Destricted, a series of films that address the issue of sexuality in art and won both international acclaim and awards at Sundance, Cannes and other major film festivals. Wakefield has contributed to W Magazine, ACNE Paper, The Journal, Artforum, among others, and was Co-Creative Director of Tar Magazine.

In December 2011, Neville was appointed Global Curator for Nike’s Flyknit, and in spring 2012, as Playboy’s new Creative Director of Special Projects which also includes a supplement for the magazine’s 60th Anniversary to be released, in May 2014. His most recent curatorial projects include Somos Libres, a presentation of the Mario Testino collection that appeared first in Lima Peru and will open in May at the Pinacoteca, Turin, as well as the groundbreaking Elevation1049, a site specific show in Gstaad Switzerland that opened in January 2014.

As a creative director Neville Wakefield grasps an intimate understanding of material things. As both curator and creative director he gives form to thought. More than any of his peers he both understands and focuses the point at which art and commerce merge, where images and ideas become one.
